Roxaboxen!
Introduction
Roxaboxen: 2003 Writing Night at Bernabi
On March 19, 2003, the Bernabi community celebrated its 8th Annual
Writing Night. This year's topic was "Community," as
represented and symbolized by the book Roxaboxen by Alice
McLerran, illustrated by Barbara Cooney.
This book tells the real-life story of a group of children who
create their own community out of rocks and boxes. They choose
roles for themselves and play there year after year. As the children
grow up, they all leave the nest, and their play-community. But
they return years later to relive their childhood experiences.

the real Roxaboxen.
On this special evening, Bernabi welcomed many families to our
very own Roxaboxen community (clicking on pictures will give you
a bigger version).
This year the focus was on oral presentations (an important component
of the NYS English Language Arts Standards), as modeled by Ms.
Heieck and Mrs. Donaghy.
After our principal, Mrs. Eagle, read the book Roxaboxen, families
were asked to write about community-related topics.

Later, students presented their stories orally in front of a rapt
audience!

Afterwards, stories were displayed in the main hall as part of
a community mural.
A wonderful time was had by all!!
