Why Ducks Have Yellow Feet and Beaks
by Rayon

A long time ago Charles the duck lived in the land where ducks had no feet and beaks. The other animals laughed at them. People hit them with brooms because they thought they were rodents.

Charles was sad that he was left out. He went for a hop in the woods so he could escape his miseries. Soon he came to a huge chest with a golden rim. The sign read, "Take three, free!" So Charles took a golden beak and 2 gold feet, because it was full of them.

He got married and they went there for their anniversary. His wife got three too. They had babies and they had the same body parts.

So the answer is: because they're gold!

Why Tigers Don’t Eat Humans
by David

March 1st seemed to be a particularly hot, steamy and moist day in the rain forest. A big ferocious black and white tiger was looking for his next meal. He loved to eat meat, especially beef.

The tiger was lucky this day; it just so happened that seven photographers had arrived in the rain forest to look for a cure for cancer. Having heard that humans were always tasty and tender, the tiger could no longer resist, so he decided to jump high just like a raptor and he tackled the prey. The tiger began to munch on the photographer and there were little crunching sounds with every bite.

After the tiger was done he felt that he may have done something wrong, so he wanted to go visit the wise old owl. After a 5 minute walk he reached the owl who in turn said, "Whooooooo, whoooooooo goes there?"

During their discussion the wise old owl had told the tiger, "Ignore the human meat," and the tiger listened to the owl's advice. The tiger started to eat meat like deer and antelope and other varieties of wild rain forest animals.

To this day, the tiger has never eaten anymore human meat as the tiger has paid attention to what the wise owl had to say.

How the Lion Got his Mane
by Miguel

Long long ago when lions had no mane, there was a lion who wanted to be different from any of the other animals in the jungle. He was the king of the jungle, yet he was just plain. He wanted to look better than all of the other animals. He would dream what it would be like to look different and have the other animals in the jungle talk about him. He would think and think what would make him look better.

Then one day while looking at the other animals he got an idea. What if I could grow hair around my face? That would make me look older and more fierce. But how would he be able to make hair grow around his face? He talked with a gorilla and asked the gorilla how he got his nice long hair. The gorilla said, "I eat a lot of bananas."

The lion tried eating bananas for months, but nothing happened. So the lion then went to talk to the buffalo. "How did you make your hair grow around your face?" the lion asked.

The buffalo answered, "I eat a lot of grass."

The lion then tried eating grass for a while, but it only made him sick.

He went to a skunk and asked him the same question. The skunk said it was the bugs he ate that made his hair so long. The lion tried eating bugs, but that didn’t help.

The lion was so very upset that he didn't realize that he was walking right into quicksand. When he realized it, it was too late. He roared for help. Soon all of his family were there to help pull him out. The other lions started pulling him by his face because that was all that they could grab. They pulled at his face and stretched his skin. They were trying to pull him out of the quicksand the only way they could.

Finally after hours of pulling they were able to pull him out of the quicksand. All the other lions just stared at him when he came out. Something happened to him. The lion didn't know anything had happened to him so he went to the swamp to get cleaned off. All of a sudden the lion saw his reflection in the water and saw all the hair he had around his face. Now he looked strong and fierce.

No one can really explain what happened, but whatever happened that day, lions from then on had manes.

Why the Toucan has a Long Beak
by Kristin

Before there were people, the toucan didn’t have such a long beak as he does today. Toucan couldn’t eat because of his small beak. One day toucan decided to ask alligator to trade snouts and beaks. Alligator said no, but said to ask snake. Toucan walked to snake and asked him to trade, then Toucan realized that snake didn’t have a nose, snout, or beak. Snake told Toucan to try Leopard.

On his way to Leopard, he tripped and when he got up, his beak hurt badly. Leopard, who was Toucan's best friend, said to him as he approached, "Toucan, why do you look like you are in pain when it is such a beautiful sunny, summer day?" Toucan told Leopard about how he had hit his beak against the rock when he had tripped over his feet. Toucan also explained how he couldn’t eat nuts and berries he found in the trees because of his short beak. Leopard said that he would help him to make his beak longer.

First, Leopard pulled Toucan's beak so it would somehow grow out. Toucan screeched in pain. Leopard decided that it wouldn't work. In distress,Toucan sat down on a rock and said as a joke, "Well, at least it grew a little." Then, Toucan's beak started to grow, then it stopped. "Wait a minute," Leopard said, "keep on lying!" Toucan started telling lies until Leopard said to stop. His beak was now big enough for Toucan to eat his food.

That's why Toucans have long beaks.

How the Toucan Got a Colorful Beak
by Anthony (Gr. 5)

Once there was a toucan who could paint really well. All the animals liked the toucan's work, but the other toucans hated it. They couldn't paint as well, so they were jealous.

One day toucan went to sleep in his cozy nest. In the middle of the night someone took toucan's paint and painted his beak.

When he woke up the next morning, he saw that his beak was colorful and pretty. The paint didn’t come off. He knew the other toucans played a trick on him, but he liked his beak anyway.

From that day forward, all toucans had colorful beaks.

How the Toucan Got his Colorful Beak
by Alesya (Gr. 5)

A long time ago in the rain forest lived a toucan who thought his singing was different from the others', and he thought that it was beautiful.

One day all of the animals gathered in one place of the rain forest because their king Lion wanted them to take part in a contest. When the toucan heard that, he knew right away what he was going to do that no one else could do. He was going to be the winner and maybe the new king!

Then the king began his speech: "I'm the King who decides everything, and I would like everybody to make a poem, song, dance, anything. But my wife, kids and I have to enjoy it."

When the speech was finished, everyone went home thinking about what would be nice to do for the king and his family to get themselves a prize. Toucan didn't worry. He knew what he was going to do and it was to sing his beautiful song that no one knew how to sing.

The toucan practiced a long, long time just so it would be perfect. But whenever he practiced, someone would interrupt by throwing food at him. The toucan didn't care much about that. Whenever someone threw a fruit or a vegetable at him from any side, he would catch it. No matter how hard they tried, he would still catch it.

The day came and everyone came shivering and with some fruits or vegetables for lunch. The toucan flew over everyone and sat next to the king and asked if he could be the last one after lunch. The lion said, "OK."

The toucan flew to his branch waiting for lunch to come, but everything went so fast that the toucan had to be an hour before lunch. That was scary for him, looking at everyone with a fruit or an vegetable in their hands. Well, at least when they would hear his singing, they would clap and not throw fruits and vegetables at him.

So the toucan went up on the stage, closed his eyes and began to sing. Then he heard laughing, but that didn't matter that much. Then he heard a "splash-splash-splash" and some more splashing and then laughing, and even the king's family was laughing.

Then the toucan opened his eyes and looked at his beak. Oh my, oh my, his beak was all colorful! The toucan was embarrassed and he flew home. He was trying to wipe his beak, but it didn't work.

Soon after that day a girl toucan came to his house with her family and said that she'd like to marry him because she liked his beak. The toucan liked the idea and they got married. Before they even had babies, all of the toucans tried to sing like the other colorfully-beaked toucan, to have their beaks colorful. Sadly, they got killed by the other animals.

So now you only see toucans with colorful beaks and they sing like their father did.

Why Toucans Have Large Beaks
by Taras (Gr. 6)

A new visitor came to the rain forest, and it was a toucan. They called him Toucan Sam where he came from, so everyone began to call him Toucan Sam now. Toucans had little beaks in those days. It was hard to eat fruit with a little beak.

One day when he was flying to his favorite place, which was a fruit tree, he got stuck in a spider web. It was a tarantula's. The tarantula was bigger than the toucan. Toucan Sam was smart, so he used his little beak to block the tarantula from sucking his blood. The tarantula grabbed the beak with four of its legs and pulled until the beak grew so big that the tarantula had to back up. Toucan used his long beak to break the web. The spider fell into elephant chocolate and was stuck there, but the toucan got to his tree and lived there forever

So now toucans have big, large beaks.
