4th grade:
Mr. Johnston's 4th grade class wrote reports about different products
from the rainforest.
Sugar
by Jeremiah
Sugar is taken from sugarcane plants that are from the rain forest.
Then it is put through a special process so it can be used. Without
sugar we would not be able to make many things taste good. There
would be no more candy. If the rain forests are destroyed, sugarcane
plants would not grow, which means no more sugar. That's why we
cant destroy the rain forest. If we do, we may become extinct.
Mangoes
by Kaydee and Danielle
A mango is a tropical fruit. The mango is found on a mango tree.
The tree is a large evergreen plant reaching 90 feet in height.
The mango tree has shiny dark green leaves, and has large pinnacles
of small pink flowers.
The mango tre is found in Florida and California and India. The
fruits are eaten fresh. The mangoes are also used in salads and
jams.
Rubber
by Thomas
Rubber comes from a tree called Brasiliensis. Rubber makes bottles
for holding water. Rubber also makes boats for crossing rivers and
oceans. Rubber is used for bicycle wheels, car wheels, and airplane
wheels. Rubber could make beds we sleep on and rubber makes erasers.
Bouncey balls are also made of rubber. If we didn't have rubber,
we wouldn't have hockey because hockey pucks are made of rubber.
Balloons and rubber bands are made of rubber, too.
Coffee
by David
Coffee comes from a tree called Botany. Coffee belongs to the family
of Rubiaccas. The cultivation of coffee is, with certain exceptions,
restricted to areas with a medium average annual temperature of
70žF, not lower than 55žF.
On ripening, the coffee berries must be picked immediately. About
two thirds of the world's coffee crop is still being prepared by
the old method of drying. The chemical composition of coffee varies
widely according to species, weather, soil condition, degree of
ripeness, and preparation.
Coconuts
by Kovalan
My report is about coconuts. Coconuts grow from the palm tree.
Coconuts have a rind. A rind is the firm outer layer of the coconut.
The rind is 1 to 2 inches thick. Below the rind is the husk. The
husk is the dry covering of the coconut.
It usually takes a year for coconuts to ripen. Coconuts are really
fun to learn about.
Brazil nuts
by Stephanie
Brazil nuts are harvested by communities living in the Amazon rain
forest. Current Brazil nut products include rain forest nut coffee.
There are even chocolate covered Brazil nuts that people eat. There
is Subway sandwich shops with Brazil nut cookies and brownies, plus
there is even rain forest crunch. If you ever realized it, there
is a lot of things made from Brazil nuts. Brazil nuts are in so
many foods. And it all started from the rain forest.
Bananas
by Marc
Bananas grow in many warm regions. The bananas start as flowers,
then they turn into little tiny bananas. Most bananas are cut before
they are ripe. Full-grown leaves are up to 6-10 feet long. Each
cluster of bananas is a hand. Bananas are picked when they are green,
so when they reach the market they are ripe. Most bananas are found
on the east coast of Brazil. |
